About Me

My name is Melissa Ortiz. I was born in California in 1995 and moved to Texas at age 10. If you are not familiar with the state, it is the land of BBQ, the San Antonio Spurs, and the best burger chain known as Whataburger. My parents are from Mexico City and I am grateful to be able to read, write, and speak in both Spanish and English. I attended The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) and graduated in May of 2018 with a Management Science degree. This degree encompasses various subjects such as finance, statistics, and analytics. However, it is mainly focused on Six Sigma, logistics, project management, and supply chain. During my time at UTSA, I discovered rock climbing and it has been my passion ever since. I was so dedicated that I made the choice to pursue it after graduation. I worked in all of the climbing gyms in my city (see resume below) and would travel outdoors to climb. Around September of last year, I met a lady who had just come back from teaching in Spain through a program called CIEE. I was hooked. I knew this was what I wanted to do because I enjoyed being a rock climbing instructor to people of all ages. So I applied in October of 2018, got accepted in February, and hopped on a plane to Spain in August. Keep in mind I've never been to the country, but I know I am not going back to the U.S.
